Nissan GTR R35 Front Differential: Weak Points & Upgrades

The Nissan GTR R35 front differential is an important part of the ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system. On a standard GTR, the OEM front differential is generally reliable. However, when power, torque and tyre grip increase, it can become a weak point in the drivetrain.

High-power GTRs, especially cars running high-grip tyres and hard launches, can place significantly more load on the front differential than Nissan originally designed it to handle.

In this guide, we look at the main OEM GTR R35 front differential weak points, common signs of failure and the available upgrades for high-performance applications.

Is the OEM GTR R35 Front Differential Weak?

The OEM front differential was designed around the factory power and torque of the Nissan GTR R35.

Once power increases significantly, the front differential has to handle much higher drivetrain loads. Hard launches make this even more demanding.

The amount of stress is not determined by horsepower alone. Important factors include:

  • Engine torque
  • Tyre grip
  • Launch boost
  • Vehicle weight
  • Track surface
  • Frequency of launches
  • Differential condition

A GTR with less power but more grip and an aggressive launch can sometimes place greater shock loads on the drivetrain than a more powerful car accelerating from speed.

OEM Front Differential Case

One of the main weak points on high-power GTRs is the OEM cast front differential case.

The case supports the bearings, differential, crown wheel and pinion. Under extreme torque and shock loads, the factory cast case can flex and, in severe applications, fracture.

Case movement can also affect the position of the internal components.

This can lead to:

Case flex → bearing movement → incorrect gear alignment → increased wear → differential failure

For high-power and drag racing applications, increasing the rigidity of the front differential case is therefore an important upgrade.

OEM Crown Wheel & Pinion

The crown wheel and pinion transfer torque through the front differential.

As power and torque increase, the load on the gear teeth also increases. Hard launches and high-grip tyres can create particularly high shock loads.

If the case or bearings move under load, the contact between the crown wheel and pinion can also change.

This can result in:

  • Abnormal gear wear
  • Chipped or damaged teeth
  • Increased backlash
  • Whining noises
  • Complete gear failure

Correct gear alignment and support become increasingly important as GTR performance increases.

Bearings & Pinion Support

The bearings and pinion support keep the internal components correctly positioned.

Bearing wear or movement can change the alignment between the crown wheel and pinion, increasing noise and wear.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Whining or howling
  • Clunking
  • Increased drivetrain backlash
  • Vibration
  • Metallic particles in the differential oil

Any unusual front drivetrain noise on a high-power GTR should be inspected before continuing to launch or race the car.

Why Hard Launches Increase Front Differential Stress

A hard AWD launch is one of the most demanding situations for the R35 drivetrain.

When a GTR launches on high-grip tyres, the tyres resist wheelspin and more torque is transferred through the drivetrain.

That load travels through the AWD system and into the front differential before reaching the front wheels.

This is why traction is just as important as horsepower when considering front differential reliability.

A drag-focused GTR that launches regularly can place much more stress on the front differential than a similar-power car mainly used for roll racing.

Upgrading the Nissan GTR R35 Front Differential

For high-power applications, simply replacing a failed OEM differential with another standard unit does not remove the original limitations.

Billet Housing vs OEM Cast Housing

One of the biggest upgrades is replacing the OEM cast differential housing with a billet housing.

The billet assembly provides increased rigidity to better support the differential, bearings and gearset under high drivetrain loads.

Better support helps maintain the correct relationship between the crown wheel and pinion when the differential is subjected to high torque.

For extreme GTR applications, strengthening the housing is just as important as strengthening the gears inside it.

Billet Crown Wheel & Pinion

The upgraded billet crown wheel and pinion are designed for applications where the factory gearset is exposed to significantly higher torque and shock loading.

The upgraded gearset works together with the billet housing and heavy-duty pinion support to create a stronger complete assembly.

Correct installation remains critical. Backlash, bearing preload and gear contact must all be correctly set during assembly.

Wavetrac Front LSD

The complete package also includes a Wavetrac Front LSD.

The LSD manages torque distribution between the two front wheels and completes the internal upgrade of the front differential.

Does Every Modified GTR Need an Upgraded Front Differential?

No.

A mildly modified street GTR does not automatically require a billet front differential.

The upgrade becomes more important as power, torque, tyre grip and launch frequency increase.

There is also no single horsepower limit for the OEM front differential. A car's tyres, weight, launch strategy, surface and intended use can have a major effect on drivetrain load.

For serious drag racing and high-horsepower GTR builds, the front differential should be considered as part of the complete drivetrain setup.

Nissan GTR R35 Front Differential Upgrade
