Nissan GT-R R35 98 RON vs E85: How Much Power Can You Make on Each Fuel?

Nissan GT-R R35 98 RON vs E85: How Much Power Can You Make on Each Fuel?

On the Nissan GT-R R35, E85 can support substantially higher boost and power than 98 RON fuel due to its greater knock resistance and stronger charge-cooling effect.

However, fuel alone does not determine horsepower. The final result depends on the complete combination of turbocharger airflow, boost pressure, ignition timing, fuel-system capacity, engine strength, intercooling, and ECU calibration.

98 RON vs E85

98 RON E85
Knock resistance Good Significantly higher
Charge-cooling effect Lower Higher
Fuel volume required Lower Higher
Fuel-system demand Lower Higher
High-boost capability More limited Significantly greater
Street convenience Excellent Depends on availability
Typical application Street / moderate power High boost / high power

Why Does E85 Support More Power?

The main advantage of E85 is increased resistance to detonation under high cylinder pressure.

Its higher latent heat of vaporisation also produces a greater cooling effect during fuel evaporation, which can help reduce charge temperature and improve knock resistance.

This gives the calibrator greater operating margin for:

  • Boost pressure
  • Ignition advance
  • Cylinder pressure
  • Torque output

E85 does not create additional airflow. It simply allows a correctly engineered setup to operate closer to its full performance potential.

How Much Power Can a GT-R Make on 98 RON?

There is no fixed horsepower limit for 98 RON.

The practical limit depends on:

  • Turbocharger efficiency
  • Boost pressure
  • Intake-air temperature
  • Engine condition
  • Ignition timing
  • Fuel pressure
  • Intercooler efficiency
  • Exhaust backpressure

As boost and cylinder pressure increase, 98 RON generally becomes more knock-limited.

For a mildly modified or daily-driven GT-R, 98 RON remains an excellent fuel when the calibration and power target are appropriate.

How Much Power Can a GT-R Make on E85?

With the correct engine, turbocharger system, fuel system, and calibration, E85 can support very high power levels.

The main limitation becomes fuel delivery, as ethanol requires substantially more fuel volume than petrol.

A high-power E85 GT-R will typically require:

  • High-flow fuel pump
  • Larger injectors
  • Upgraded fuel rail
  • Fuel-pressure monitoring
  • Flex-fuel sensor
  • Correct ECU calibration
  • Dual-injector system at higher power levels

Real Example: Our 2,200 HP GT-R Nismo

Our 2023 Nissan GT-R Nismo provides a clear real-world example.

98 RON

880 WHP at approximately 2.0 bar

E85

1,972.8 WHP at approximately 3.85 bar

The difference is not simply the result of changing fuel.

The vehicle already had the engine, twin Precision 6875 turbochargers, intercooling, fuel system, and drivetrain required to support this level of performance.

E85 provided the knock resistance and fuel characteristics required to safely operate at a significantly higher boost level and utilise much more of the available hardware capacity.

Can a Stock VR38 Run E85?

Yes.

A stock VR38DETT can operate on ethanol when the fuel system and ECU calibration are correctly configured.

Our general approach is:

650–750 HP: 98 RON or ethanol

Around 850 HP on a stock engine: ethanol required for our setup

1,000+ HP: ethanol becomes increasingly important as boost and cylinder pressure rise

The correct limit should always be determined by engine condition, torque, boost, thermal load, and intended use rather than horsepower alone.

Why Does E85 Require a Larger Fuel System?

Ethanol contains less energy per unit of volume than petrol, so a greater fuel mass and volume must be delivered to the engine.

This increases demand on:

  • Fuel pumps
  • Injectors
  • Fuel rails
  • Fuel lines
  • Fuel-pressure control

For this reason, fuel-pressure monitoring is critical on high-output GT-R applications.

What Is Flex Fuel?

GT1R GEN 2 FLEX FUEL KIT 08-AN - Subzero Motorsports - FOR NISSAN GTR R35

A flex-fuel sensor measures the actual ethanol concentration in the fuel.

With the correct EcuTek calibration, the ECU can adjust key strategies such as:

  • Boost
  • Ignition timing
  • Fueling

according to ethanol content.

This allows the vehicle to operate safely across different mixtures of 98 RON and ethanol without assuming a fixed ethanol percentage.

Which Fuel Should You Use?

For a mildly modified street GT-R, 98 RON remains an excellent choice.

As boost, cylinder pressure, and power increase, E85 provides significantly greater tuning headroom.

For owners who require both road usability and maximum performance, a properly engineered flex-fuel system is often the most practical solution.

The correct fuel strategy should always be selected around the complete vehicle specification:

engine + turbochargers + fuel system + cooling + transmission + ECU calibration

Frequently Asked Questions

How much power can a GT-R make on 98 RON?

There is no fixed limit. The result depends on boost pressure, turbocharger efficiency, engine condition, intake temperature, and calibration.

How much power can a GT-R make on E85?

With the correct supporting hardware, more than 2,000 HP is possible. Our 2023 GT-R Nismo produced 1,972.8 WHP on E85.

Can a stock VR38 run E85?

Yes, provided the fuel system and ECU calibration are correctly configured.

Does E85 require larger injectors and fuel pumps?

In most performance applications, yes. Ethanol requires greater fuel volume, increasing injector and pump demand.

Can 98 RON and E85 be mixed?

Yes, when the vehicle is equipped with a properly calibrated flex-fuel system.
