At Subzero Motorsport in Dubai, we work with Nissan GTR R35 GR6 transmissions ranging from stock street-driven cars to 2,000+ HP builds, and the transmission specification changes completely depending on torque, power delivery and intended use.
The Nissan GTR R35 GR6 transmission is one of the biggest reasons the car can put serious power to the ground. The dual-clutch gearbox delivers fast shifts while working together with the GTR's AWD system, but as horsepower and torque increase, the way the GR6 is built and calibrated becomes extremely important.
One of the questions we get asked most at Subzero Motorsport is:
How much horsepower can the Nissan GTR R35 GR6 transmission actually handle?
There isn't one fixed number.
A GR6 can survive at a power level where another transmission may fail. Horsepower matters, but so do torque, clutch pressure, how quickly boost comes in, shift points, launches, traction, transmission condition and, most importantly, the calibration.
A properly built and tuned GR6 is extremely capable. A poorly set up one can fail at a power level that should never have been a problem.
How Much Power Can a Stock GTR GR6 Handle?
The factory GR6 is stronger than many people give it credit for.
A healthy stock transmission can handle a good increase over factory power, but the way that power is delivered makes a huge difference.
A GTR making 700 HP and constantly launching hard can put more shock through the drivetrain than a considerably more powerful GTR accelerating progressively from a roll.
This is why we look at torque delivery, not just the horsepower number.
On a stock GR6, adding power without correctly managing torque and clutch pressure can cause clutch slip, excessive heat and unnecessary load on the factory gears.
And this is exactly where tuning becomes important.

GR6 Tuning Can Make or Break the Setup
At Subzero Motorsport, ECM and TCM calibration is handled by Mohammad Al Jabri.
We don't treat the engine tune and transmission tune as two separate things. The engine and GR6 have to work together.
Especially on a stock GR6, the objective isn't simply to increase clutch pressure and make every shift as aggressive as possible.
Too little clutch pressure can allow the clutch to slip, creating heat and wear.
Too aggressive a calibration can shock the gears, shafts and other drivetrain components.
The correct setup sits between the two and depends on the actual car: horsepower, torque curve, turbo setup, clutch, gearset, tires and intended use.
Shift Points Are Part of the Tune

Another important part of GR6 calibration is deciding where the car should shift.
The highest RPM an engine can reach isn't automatically the best RPM to change gear.
Mohammad Al Jabri sets the shift points according to the engine's power curve, turbo setup and usable RPM range, while also considering the transmission and complete drivetrain combination.
This is especially important when driving the GTR in M mode.
With our calibration strategy, the GR6 can still automatically command the next gear at the predetermined shift point while in M mode if the driver doesn't pull the paddle in time.
Instead of allowing the engine to continue into the rev limiter under full load, the transmission shifts at the RPM we have selected for that particular setup.
On a high-horsepower GTR, this becomes even more important.
The tune should work with the mechanical limits of the GR6, not against them.
Why Stage 1 Matters Even on a Stock Nissan GTR

You don't need a 1,000 HP GTR to start thinking about the transmission.
You don't even need a modified GTR.
Our STAGE 1 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (600 TQ) is the foundation of our GR6 program and is designed for approximately 600 TQ / 800 HP.
But we don't consider Stage 1 only a performance upgrade.
The oldest R35s have now been on the road for many years. Even a completely stock car has gone through thousands of shifts and heat cycles.
Seals age. O-rings harden. Filters collect contamination. Oil pump components wear. Pressure sensors age.
That is why our Stage 1 package focuses heavily on the basic health of the GR6.
It includes components such as the Dodson DMS-1938 FWD Output Shaft Seal, Dodson DMS-1952 Clutch Piston Shaft Seal (Pair) and Dodson DMS-7162 O-Ring Kit to address important sealing areas within the transmission.
For filtration, we use the Dodson DMS-2810 Reusable Metal Mesh Canister Transmission Filter, Dodson DMS-7164 Magnet Kit for Pan Filter, Dodson DMS-7178 Valve Body Rebuild Kit (9x Line Filters + 2x Valve Body Filters) and OEM Transmission Oil Filter Assy – 31726-JF01A.
The oil pump is also addressed using the Dodson DMS-7160 Oil Pump Repair Kit (Shaft and Shim) and Dodson DMS-7161 Oil Pump Upgrade Kit (Plate and Gasket).
Stage 1 also includes OEM Transmission Pressure Sensors (2024 Calibrated), Dodson DMS-7219 Piston Seal Replacement, SZM Lock Cir-Clips Set (MC1 / MC2 / MC3 / GL), OEM Transmission Oil Pan Gasket – 31397-JF00A and high-performance gear oil.
The point isn't to turn every stock GTR into a race car.
The point is to start with a healthy GR6.
For an older or higher-mileage Nissan GTR R35, that can be just as important as increasing the horsepower capacity of the transmission.
What GR6 Transmission Package Do You Need?
As torque increases, the clutch, gears and supporting components have to progress with it.
This is why Subzero Motorsport offers five different GR6 transmission build packages instead of trying to use one specification for every GTR.
STAGE 1 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (600 TQ)
Recommended for approximately 600 TQ / 800 HP.
This is our foundation GR6 rebuild and the package we recommend looking at even for stock and lightly modified GTRs where transmission age, condition and reliability are the main concerns.
For many street-driven R35s, Stage 1 is all the transmission actually needs.
STAGE 2 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (800 TQ / ~1000 HP)
Once the car moves toward the 1,000 HP range, clutch capacity and first gear become more important.
Our STAGE 2 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (800 TQ / ~1000 HP) starts with the Stage 1 foundation and adds the Albins Nissan GTR R35 1st Gear Kit together with the Dodson DMS-8081 Superstock 9 Clutch Kit With Forged Inner Baskets.
The Dodson Superstock 9 increases clutch capacity, while the Albins first gear strengthens one of the most highly loaded gears during hard acceleration.
This makes Stage 2 a strong choice for a fast street GTR that has moved well beyond stock power without requiring the complete geartrain specification of our higher stages.
STAGE 3 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (1000 TQ / ~1200 HP)
At this level, we stop looking at first gear alone.
Our STAGE 3 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (1000 TQ / ~1200 HP) uses the Albins Nissan R35 1st To 6th Gear Kit (New Version) together with the Dodson DMS-8081 Superstock 9 Clutch Kit With Forged Inner Baskets.
The Albins 1st-to-6th gearset uses wider, surface-ground gears designed for increased strength and durability, making it a major step beyond simply upgrading the factory first gear.
Stage 3 also introduces our SZM GTR R35 Transmission Billet Thrust Plate and SZM Billet Oversize Transmission Oil Pan Nissan GTR R35 Gr6
At this point, we're no longer simply increasing clutch capacity. We're building the GR6 around sustained higher torque and harder use.
STAGE 4 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (1200 TQ / ~1700 HP)
When a GTR moves into the 1,500–1,700 HP range, the transmission specification changes significantly.
Our STAGE 4 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (1200 TQ / ~1700 HP) combines the Albins Nissan R35 1st To 6th Gear Kit (New Version) with the higher-capacity Dodson DMS-8034 Clutch Kit Promax 11 Nissan GTR R35 2009-.
We also reinforce the GR6 using the SZM Nissan GTR R35 GR6 Billet Mid Plate, SZM GTR R35 Transmission Billet Thrust Plate and SZM Billet Oversize Transmission Oil Pan Nissan GTR R35 Gr6.
This is the level where the GR6 has to be treated as a serious high-horsepower transmission, particularly for GTRs being used for roll racing, drag racing and repeated high-load acceleration.
STAGE 5 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (1600 TQ / ~2400 HP)
At 2,000+ HP, asking which clutch to install is no longer enough.
The entire drivetrain needs to be considered.
Our STAGE 5 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (1600 TQ / ~2400 HP) brings together the clutch, gears, shafts, FWD system and supporting drivetrain components.
The geartrain includes the Albins Nissan R35 1st To 6th Gear Kit (New Version) together with the Albins Nissan GTR R35 Drop Gears, Albins Nissan GTR R35 FWD Gear Kit and Albins Nissan GTR R35 Secondary Billet Shaft.
Clutch capacity is increased using the Dodson DMS-8035 Clutch Kit Promax 12 For Nissan GTR R35 2009-, supported by the SZM Nissan GTR R35 GR6 FWD 11/11 Upgraded Clutch Freeloader Plate.
The GR6 itself is reinforced further with the SZM Nissan GTR R35 GR6 Billet Mid Plate, SZM GTR R35 Transmission Billet Thrust Plate, SZM GR6 Primary Input Clutch Shaft 300M – Heavy Duty Nissan GTR R35, SZM Billet Oversize Transmission Oil Pan Nissan GTR R35 Gr6 and SZM Shift Fork Set With Shafts Nissan GTR R35.
But at this power level, we also have to look beyond the transmission casing.
The SZM Transmission Brace Kit & Billet Rear Differential Cover adds additional support to the drivetrain and rear differential assembly, while the Wavetrac Differential Nissan GTR R35 Rear 2015+ upgrades the rear differential to improve torque distribution and traction as power levels increase.
At this level, every part needs to work together.
A 2,000+ HP GTR doesn't simply need a bigger clutch. It needs the clutch, gears, shafts, FWD system, differential, supporting hardware and calibration to be matched as one package.

Why Albins Gearsets Are Used in Our Higher GR6 Packages

As power increases, the factory gears eventually become part of the equation.
The Albins Nissan R35 1st To 6th Gear Kit (New Version) uses extra-wide, surface-ground gears designed to improve strength while maintaining quiet operation.
The GR6 Is Only One Part of the GTR Drivetrain
At very high horsepower, protecting the transmission alone isn't enough.
The GR6 still has to send power through the rest of the Nissan GTR AWD drivetrain.
That is why Subzero Motorsport also carries dedicated GTR R35 gear kits, differentials, billet drivetrain components, main and FWD driveshafts, front and rear axles and GR6 transmission components.
When power increases, the complete path from the engine to the tires has to be considered.
This is particularly important on cars that launch hard, run high-grip tires or repeatedly see high-speed acceleration.
Does a GTR Need a Built Transmission If It Isn't Raced?
Not necessarily a high-stage transmission.
But that doesn't mean the GR6 should be ignored.
A stock R35 can still have a transmission that is 10 or 15 years old. For these cars, the priority may simply be restoring seals, filtration, oil pump performance, hydraulic operation and other age-related components.
That is exactly where our STAGE 1 – TRANSMISSION BUILD (600 TQ) fits.
A 2,000 HP GTR obviously has completely different requirements, but the principle is the same:
Start with a healthy transmission and build only as far as the application requires.
So, How Much HP Can the Nissan GTR GR6 Really Handle?
There is no honest single horsepower number that guarantees GR6 reliability.
A healthy stock GR6 with the correct calibration can work extremely well above factory power. As torque increases, clutch capacity needs to increase. Push further and the gears, shafts, FWD components and supporting drivetrain hardware also need attention.
And the hardware still needs the right calibration.
