Nissan Patrol TB48 Turbo: Stage 1 vs Stage 2 — Power, Parts and Pricing

Nissan Patrol TB48 Turbo: Stage 1 vs Stage 2 — Power, Parts and Pricing

The Nissan Patrol Safari, commonly known as the VTC in the UAE and GCC, is one of the region's most popular vehicles for turbocharging. Its 4.8-litre TB48 inline-six engine has become a favourite among enthusiasts looking for more power while retaining the character of the original Patrol.

At Subzero Motorsport in Dubai, we offer two complete Nissan Patrol TB48 turbo packages: Stage 1, targeting 400–450 HP, and Stage 2, targeting 500–550 HP.

Both packages use the Garrett GBC37-900 turbocharger, but the supporting components are different. Stage 1 offers a more straightforward conversion, while Stage 2 includes additional fuel delivery, standalone engine management, internal engine upgrades and more extensive transmission modifications.

Both are installed and tuned at Subzero Motorsport, with manual and automatic configurations available.

Nissan Patrol TB48 Stage 1 vs Stage 2: What's the Difference?

The biggest difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 is not the turbocharger. Both packages use the same Garrett GBC37-900 and TiAL 60 mm external wastegate.

They also share a ceramic-coated 304 stainless-steel turbo manifold, ceramic-coated 3.5-inch downpipe, powder-coated 3-inch intercooler, intercooler piping and a 304 stainless-steel 3.5-inch quiet-style full exhaust.

The main differences are the fuel system, engine management, internal engine components and transmission upgrades.

Stage 1 — 400–450 HP

Stage 1 targets approximately 300–350 wheel horsepower. It retains the factory ECU, fuel injectors, head gasket and oil pump gears, with a DeatschWerks DW300 fuel pump and upgraded hardwire power supply.

Stage 2 — 500–550 HP

Stage 2 targets approximately 400–450 wheel horsepower. It adds Injector Dynamics ID1050-XDS injectors, a boost-activated Walbro 525 secondary fuel pump, MaxxECU Track Gen 2, Greddy 2.0 mm head gasket and SZM billet oil pump gears.

Both stages include custom dyno calibration by Mohammad Al Jabri (MRJ), with transmission upgrades appropriate to the selected manual or automatic configuration.

These horsepower figures are approximate engine and wheel horsepower targets, not guaranteed dyno results. Actual output depends on engine condition, fuel quality, boost pressure and calibration.

Stage 1: Nissan Patrol TB48 Turbo Package — 400–450 HP

Stage 1 is our complete turbo conversion for Nissan Patrol Safari owners targeting approximately 400–450 engine HP, or 300–350 WHP.

It offers a significant increase in performance without the standalone engine management and internal engine modifications included in Stage 2.

The package includes the Garrett turbo system, upgraded fuel pump, full exhaust and custom ECU calibration. Automatic models also receive the appropriate transmission upgrade.

Garrett GBC37-900 Turbo System

The Stage 1 turbo system includes a Garrett GBC37-900 turbocharger, paired with a TiAL 60 mm external wastegate.

The exhaust side uses a ceramic-coated 304 stainless-steel turbo manifold and ceramic-coated 3.5-inch downpipe.

Charge-air cooling is handled by a powder-coated 3-inch intercooler with 3-inch intercooler piping. The installation also includes engine bay covers and powder-coated finishing.

The Garrett GBC37-900 provides the airflow capacity required for the Stage 1 power target, while the TiAL external wastegate regulates exhaust flow through the turbocharger to control boost pressure.

The ceramic-coated manifold and downpipe are built to handle the elevated exhaust temperatures associated with turbocharged operation.

Stage 1 Fuel System — DW300 with Hardwire

Stage 1 retains the factory TB48 fuel injectors and uses a DeatschWerks DW300 fuel pump with an upgraded hardwire power supply.

The DW300 replaces the original fuel pump, while the hardwire upgrade provides a dedicated electrical supply to support pump operation under increased engine load.

Unlike Stage 2, this configuration does not use larger fuel injectors or an additional boost-activated pump.

3.5-Inch Stainless-Steel Quiet-Style Exhaust

Stage 1 includes a 304 stainless-steel, 3.5-inch full exhaust system in a quiet-style configuration.

The system provides additional exhaust flow while maintaining a more controlled exhaust note for regular road use.

The full exhaust is included in the complete Stage 1 conversion.

Stage 2: Nissan Patrol TB48 Turbo Package — 500–550 HP

Stage 2 takes the TB48 further, targeting 500–550 engine HP, or approximately 400–450 WHP.

The turbocharger remains the Garrett GBC37-900, but the supporting configuration is more comprehensive.

Compared with Stage 1, Stage 2 adds larger Injector Dynamics fuel injectors, an additional fuel pump, standalone MaxxECU management, internal engine upgrades, additional monitoring sensors and upgraded transmission components.

Garrett Turbo System and Full 3.5-Inch Exhaust

Stage 2 uses the same Garrett GBC37-900 turbocharger and TiAL 60 mm external wastegate as Stage 1.

The turbocharger is paired with a ceramic-coated 304 stainless-steel manifold, ceramic-coated 3.5-inch downpipe, powder-coated 3-inch intercooler and matching intercooler piping.

A 304 stainless-steel, 3.5-inch quiet-style full exhaust is included.

Both packages use the same turbocharger model. The difference lies in the supporting hardware and engine management required for their respective horsepower targets.

Greddy 2.0 mm Head Gasket and SZM Billet Oil Pump Gears

Stage 2 includes two internal engine modifications not found in Stage 1.

Greddy 2.0 mm Head Gasket

The factory head gasket is replaced with a Greddy 2.0 mm gasket as part of the higher-boost engine configuration.

Correct installation and surface preparation remain essential to achieving proper cylinder sealing.

SZM Billet Oil Pump Gears

The original oil pump gears are replaced with SZM billet gears, selected for their additional mechanical strength under demanding engine operating conditions.

Both modifications and their installation are included in the complete Stage 2 package.

Stage 2 Fuel System — ID1050-XDS Injectors and Walbro 525

Fuel delivery is one of the main differences between the two stages.

Stage 1 uses factory injectors and a single DW300 pump. Stage 2 moves to Injector Dynamics ID1050-XDS injectors and a dual-pump fuel system.

Rather than replacing the factory fuel pump, Stage 2 retains it as the primary pump and adds a Walbro 525 secondary fuel pump that activates under boost.

The system also includes upgraded fuel pump wiring, a fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure monitoring.

When the engine comes onto boost, the additional Walbro 525 supplies the extra fuel required at higher loads.

Together with the ID1050-XDS injectors, this arrangement provides the increased fuel delivery capacity required for the Stage 2 power target.

MaxxECU Track Gen 2 and Engine Monitoring

Stage 2 includes a MaxxECU Track Gen 2 standalone engine management system with single lambda and a custom engine wiring harness.

The system is paired with fuel pressure, oil pressure and intake-air temperature sensors, along with electronic boost control.

The standalone ECU provides greater control over fuel delivery, ignition timing and boost pressure.

Its additional sensor inputs allow important operating conditions to be monitored and, when correctly configured, incorporated into engine protection strategies.

Unlike Stage 1, which retains the factory ECU, Stage 2 uses standalone engine management as part of its complete specification.

Stage 2 Complete Package Prices
