Nissan GT-R R35 Fuel System Guide: 650–2,200+ HP | Subzero Motorsport

Nissan GT-R R35 Fuel System Guide: 650–2,200+ HP | Subzero Motorsport

What Fuel System Does a Nissan GT-R R35 Need for 650, 850, 1,050 or 2,200+ HP?

As power and boost increase on the Nissan GT-R R35 VR38DETT, fuel demand increases significantly. The factory injectors and fuel pumps eventually become a limitation as more airflow and boost require the engine to consume more fuel.

At Subzero Motorsport in Dubai, UAE, we upgrade the GT-R fuel system in stages based on horsepower, fuel type and, most importantly, actual fuel-pressure stability under load.

The basic progression is:

650–750 HP: ID1050x injectors + dual in-tank fuel pumps + hardwire kit. Can run on pump gas or ethanol.

850 HP (Minimum setup): ID1340x injectors + SZM Fuel Rail Kit + dual in-tank fuel pumps + hardwire kit. Ethanol is required when targeting 850 HP on a stock engine.

850 HP Recommended / Up to 1,050 HP: T1 brushless fuel system + SZM Fuel Rail Kit + ID1340x injectors.

1,050–2,200+ HP: T1 brushless fuel system + SZM Fuel Rail Kit + dual-injector setup (Boostlogic dual injector intake manifold or SZM dual injector oem intake manifold) + Boostlogic dual injector controller.

Fuel Pressure Monitoring

A fuel-pressure sensor is required at every power level.

As boost, RPM and engine load increase, the fuel system must maintain stable fuel pressure. If fuel pressure begins to drop under load, the engine can run lean and the risk of engine damage increases.

This is why Subzero Motorsport monitors fuel pressure during tuning on modified GT-R R35 builds. The fuel system must prove that it can maintain the required pressure before the car is pushed further.

Ethanol / Flex Fuel

For 650–750 HP, the GT-R can run on either pump gas or ethanol depending on the setup and intended use.

For a stock-engine GT-R targeting 850 HP, ethanol is required.

Whenever ethanol is used, a flex-fuel sensor kit is required. The sensor measures the ethanol content of the fuel and provides this information to the ECU so the calibration can compensate for changes in ethanol concentration.

Ethanol also requires greater fuel volume compared with gasoline for a similar power output, which makes injector capacity, fuel-pump capacity and fuel-pressure stability even more important.

What Fuel Injectors Does a Nissan GT-R R35 Need?

One of the first fuel-system limitations when increasing GT-R power is injector capacity.

For approximately 650–750 HP, we use Injector Dynamics ID1050x injectors.

The larger injectors provide the additional fuel capacity required as boost, airflow and fuel demand increase.

For builds targeting approximately 850 HP, we move to larger Injector Dynamics ID1340x injectors.

As power increases further, injector capacity alone is no longer enough. Fuel-pump capacity, electrical supply and fuel-pressure stability must all be considered as part of the complete fuel system.

GT-R R35 Stage 1 Fuel System: 650–750 HP

For approximately 650–750 HP, upgrading the injectors alone is not enough. The fuel pumps must also be capable of supplying the additional fuel volume required as boost increases.

The SZM Stage 1 Nissan GT-R R35 Fuel System uses:

  • DW300 primary fuel pump
  • Walbro 525 secondary fuel pump
  • SZM Fuel Pump Hardwire Kit
  • Fuel-pressure sensor

This combination increases available fuel volume, while the hardwire kit provides the electrical supply required by the upgraded pumps.

For 650–750 HP, this system is combined with ID1050x injectors and can be used with pump gas or ethanol depending on the setup.

For approximately 850 HP, the dual in-tank pump configuration can be retained as the minimum setup, combined with ID1340x injectors and the SZM Fuel Rail Kit. However, because this configuration is already operating close to its practical limit at this power level, particularly on ethanol and during sustained high-load conditions, we recommend upgrading to the T1 brushless fuel system. On a stock-engine GT-R targeting 850 HP, ethanol is required.

Why Is Fuel Pressure Important on a Modified GT-R?

Fuel pressure is one of the most important parameters to monitor when tuning a high-power Nissan GT-R R35.

A fuel pump may be advertised to support a certain horsepower, but that does not guarantee that the complete fuel system will maintain the required pressure under real engine load.

As boost, RPM and airflow increase, fuel demand increases.

If the pumps cannot maintain the required fuel delivery, fuel pressure can drop. This can cause the engine to run lean under boost and increase the risk of engine damage.

This is why Subzero Motorsport installs a fuel-pressure sensor and monitors fuel pressure during tuning.

The question is not simply:

“How much horsepower is this fuel pump rated for?”

The more important question is:

“Can the complete fuel system maintain stable fuel pressure at the target boost and power?”

What Fuel-System Upgrades Does a GT-R Need for E85?

Running E85 or other ethanol blends requires greater fuel volume compared with gasoline for a similar power output.

A Nissan GT-R R35 being converted to ethanol or flex fuel therefore needs the appropriate:

  • Larger fuel injectors
  • Upgraded fuel pumps with the required harnesses
  • Fuel-pressure sensor
  • Flex-fuel sensor kit
  • Correct ECU calibration

The flex-fuel sensor measures the ethanol content in the fuel, allowing the calibration to account for variations in ethanol concentration.

Fuel-pressure monitoring becomes particularly important because the additional fuel-volume requirement places greater demand on the complete fuel system.

For 650–750 HP, ethanol is optional depending on the setup.

For a stock-engine GT-R targeting approximately 850 HP, ethanol is required.

What Fuel System Does an 850 HP GT-R Need?

For Nissan GT-R R35 builds targeting approximately 850 HP, Subzero Motorsport uses Injector Dynamics ID1340x injectors, an upgraded fuel-pump system and the SZM Fuel Rail Kit.

Compared with the ID1050x injectors used on our 650–750 HP setups, the ID1340x provides additional injector capacity and headroom for the higher fuel demand.

For a stock-engine GT-R targeting 850 HP, ethanol is required.

The required setup includes:

  • ID1340x injectors
  • SZM Fuel Rail Kit
  • Dual upgraded in-tank fuel pumps
  • Fuel-pump hardwire kit
  • Fuel-pressure sensor
  • Flex-fuel sensor kit

While the dual in-tank pump setup can support this power level, it is already operating close to its practical limit at around 850 HP, particularly on ethanol and during sustained high-load conditions.

For this reason, Subzero Motorsport recommends upgrading to the T1 brushless fuel system whenever possible. The brushless system provides greater fuel-flow capacity, a better safety margin under continuous boost and high fuel demand, and significantly more headroom than a conventional dual-pump setup.

It also avoids the need to replace the complete fuel-pump system again if the car is upgraded to a higher power level in the future.

Whichever option is used, the complete fuel system must maintain the required fuel volume and stable fuel pressure throughout the full boost and RPM range.

When is it recommended to upgrade to the T1 fuel system?

For Nissan GT-R R35 builds targeting approximately 850 HP or more, Subzero Motorsport recommends upgrading to the T1 brushless fuel system.

Although an upgraded dual in-tank pump configuration can support approximately 850 HP, it is already operating close to its practical limit at this power level, particularly when running ethanol and during sustained high-load conditions.

For this reason, the T1 brushless system is our recommended option for an 850 HP build, providing greater fuel-flow capacity, a better safety margin and more consistent fuel-pressure stability under high demand.

By approximately 1,000–1,050 HP, we move away from the dual in-tank pump configuration and use the T1 brushless fuel system as the standard setup.

This system is typically combined with Injector Dynamics ID1340x injectors and the SZM Fuel Rail Kit.

A typical configuration includes:

  • T1 brushless fuel pump
  • T1 fuel-pump controller
  • SZM billet fuel-pump hanger
  • SZM Fuel Rail Kit
  • Fuel-pressure regulator
  • ID1340x injectors
  • Fuel-pressure sensor
  • Flex-fuel sensor when running ethanol

The goal is not simply to install a larger fuel pump. The complete fuel system must provide sufficient fuel volume while maintaining stable fuel pressure throughout the full RPM and boost range.

When Does a GT-R Need Dual Injectors?

Boost Logic V2 intake manifold with 12 injector option

Once fuel demand moves beyond the practical range of a single injector per cylinder, we use a T1 brushless fuel system, SZM Fuel Rail Kit, a dual-injector intake manifold and a dual-injector controller with wiring harness.

Depending on the build, a Subzero Motorsport dual-injector setup can include:

Primary injectors: ID1050x or ID1340x
Secondary injectors: ID1750x or ID2600x

The primary injectors handle idle, cruising and lower-load operation.

As boost and engine load increase, the secondary injectors provide the additional fuel required.

This arrangement allows us to maintain good street drivability while providing the significantly greater fuel volume required by 1,500 HP, 1,800 HP and 2,200+ HP Nissan GT-R R35 builds.

Nissan GT-R R35 Fuel System Requirements by Horsepower

Power Target Recommended Fuel-System Setup
650–750 HP ID1050x + dual in-tank pumps + hardwire kit
850 HP

Minimum: ID1340x + SZM Fuel Rail Kit + dual in-tank pumps + hardwire kit.

T1 brushless fuel system recommended.

Up to 1,050 HP T1 brushless fuel system + SZM Fuel Rail Kit + ID1340x injectors
1,050–2,200+ HP T1 brushless fuel system + SZM Fuel Rail Kit + dual-injector setup

*A fuel-pressure sensor is required at every power level.*

For 650–750 HP, pump gas or ethanol can be used depending on the setup.

Whenever ethanol is used, a flex-fuel sensor kit is required.

For a stock-engine GT-R targeting approximately 850 HP, ethanol is required.

These horsepower figures should be treated as general guidelines rather than absolute limits. Actual fuel requirements depend on fuel type, boost pressure, injector duty cycle, fuel pressure, engine configuration and intended use.

Can a Fuel System Cause Engine Damage on a GT-R?

Yes.

A fuel system that cannot maintain the required fuel delivery under boost can cause fuel pressure to fall and the engine to run lean.

This becomes increasingly important as GT-R power and boost increase.

For this reason, we do not select a fuel system based only on an advertised horsepower rating.

We select the injectors, pumps and supporting components for the intended combination and then verify fuel-pressure stability under load during tuning.

If the fuel system cannot maintain safe and stable pressure, the car should not be pushed further simply because an individual component is theoretically rated for the target horsepower.

OEM Fuel Canister, EVAP Solenoid and Valve Maintenance

On modified Nissan GT-R R35s, the OEM fuel canister, EVAP solenoid and associated valve should be inspected regularly and replaced more frequently when required, especially on higher-power cars and vehicles running ethanol.

These components are still part of the factory fuel-vapor and tank-venting system. As the fuel system is upgraded and the demands on the car increase, their condition should not be overlooked.

At Subzero Motorsport, we treat the OEM canister, EVAP solenoid and valve as maintenance items on modified GT-Rs and recommend checking them periodically rather than waiting for a fault or fuel-system issue to appear.

Their replacement interval depends on the car's setup, fuel used, mileage and condition, so there is no single fixed interval that applies to every GT-R.
